This year at King’s Park Academy, we have introduced ‘Maths No Problem’ (MNP), a maths curriculum based on the ‘Singapore System’ to Years 1, 3 and 5. Maths No Problem has 3 main concepts:
- Concrete resources – throughout the whole school, children are encouraged to use resources (for example, place value counters) to support them in maths learning.
- Pictorial resources – once the children have learned a concept using concrete resources, they are moved on to using pictures to represent mathematical concepts.
- Abstract – finally, once they have mastered a concept using concrete and pictorial resources, the children are taught to use the skills learned in different ways.
Teachers have reported that the children are showing greater understanding, are progressing more rapidly and – most importantly – they are enjoying their maths lessons.
